Metal bellows are manufactured from a single or multi-ply cylindrical package.
Stainless steel strip sheet is compactly coiled around a longitudinally seam
welded inner cylinder, in as many layers as required for pressure stability.
By pressing out convolutions, the cylindrical package is formed into a bellows.
The deformation of the material occurring in the process is at the same time a
reliable test for the quality of the longitudinal seam of the cylinder. Bellows
elements are constructed of relatively thin gauge material in order to provide
the flexibility needed to absorb the mechanical and thermal movements expected
in service.
